HIV in Virginia

Approximately 1,063 Virginians are diagnosed with HIV disease each year. One in 349 people in Virginia are known to be living with HIV disease.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the virus that leads to AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). Not everyone diagnosed with HIV has AIDS, and due to advances in medications, some people may never receive an AIDS diagnosis.  About 21,000 Virginians are living with HIV/AIDS as of 2009 and an additional 4,500 Virginians are living with HIV but do not know their status. It is estimated that 50 percent or less of Virginians living with HIV/AIDS are not in care.

For every 5 Virginians living with HIV/AIDS, approximately

4 are men

3 are Black

2 are men who have sex with men

2 are ages 20 – 34 at diagnosis
