A new “sex superbug” – an antibiotic resistant strain of gonorrhea – has been found in Hawaii and California. U.S. Health officials are now warning that it has the potential to be as deadly as AIDS, at least in the short term. Teens and individuals in their early 20s likely face the highest risk.
The U.S. is seeing giant spikes in gonorrhea. Utah saw a 74 percent rise in gonorrhea cases in 2012, with the trend continuing into the first few months of this year.
In Minnesota, cases rose 35 percent in 2012, according to the state’s department of health, and according to the latest statistics from the CDC, ‘During 2010–2011, 61 percent (31/51) of states, plus the District of Columbia, reported an increase in gonorrhea rates.’

Billionaire Bill Gates is opening his wallet so you can have more fun – safely – when you open your fly!
We all know that using a condom helps prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. Most of us also agree (whether we’ll admit it or not) that using a condom just isn’t that much fun. Gates agrees so much that he’s put up $100,000 to fuel the development of the “next generation” condom that keeps sex safe without killing the fun factor!
Our drag queens and female impersonators have done so much to promote HIV awareness and prevention that ASG wanted to do something to acknowledge their contribution to the community. So, last year, we started the Miss Red Ribbon Pageant and had three lovely contestants vie to be the Queen of ASG. Contestants competed in four categories: HIV Presentation, Interview, Evening Gown, and Talent. It was a close race, neck and bejeweled neck – but by the end of the evening we crowned Nevaeh Symone, the winner in every single category, as our symbol of excellence. She will relinquish her Red Ribbon in June.
ASG is gearing up for the 2nd Annual Miss Red Ribbon pageant. The crown arrived this week and ASG is thrilled to announce that Tara Wheeler will be the pageant hostess and emcee again this year, even though she’s no longer a Charlottesville resident.
Applications are being accepted for contestants for this year’s contest.
Anyone interested in running for Miss Red Ribbon, please contact our Pageant Coordinator, Chris Barnett, at christopher.barnett@asgva.org or 434.981.2118. A little bit of bad news today – but one set back doesn’t mean defeat!
The Calgary Herald is reporting that the U.S. has stopped testing of a possible AIDS vaccine after men involved in the test turned out to be more likely to contract AIDS than those who had a dummy shot.
Shout-out to the Newsplex for putting us on the front page.
SISTA mentor Doris Plant-Hill talks about standing up for yourself with NBC 29′s Natalie Wilson.
